The BIG Picnic
An event to celebrate Biodiversity in Gloucestershire (BIG) on May 22nd International Day of Biodiversity
Gloucestershire Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group would like to invite you to celebrate the International Year of Biodiversity with a BIG Picnic on Saturday May 22nd 12.30 – 3.30pm at Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common. Gloucestershire has diverse and wonderful biodiversity and the BIG (Biodiversity in Gloucestershire) Picnic is a chance for everyone to go out and enjoy the spectacular Gloucestershire countryside and its wildlife.

Gloucestershire FWAG would like to invite all partner organisations, interest groups, schools and colleges, villages and community groups in Gloucestershire to organise their own picnic, big or small, in places rich in wildlife that are special to them, like commons or nature reserves; or on farms with friends, or join us at our BIG Picnic.
FWAG’s BIG Picnic is our national celebration of Biodiversity here in Gloucestershire, on the top of Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common and we invite everyone to join us. We are organising the event with partners including Cheltenham Borough Council, Natural England, the Friends of Leckhampton Hill and Charlton Kings Common (FOLK), the Cotswold Way Team and Butterfly Conservation to name a few. We are hoping a celebrity or two may come along and maybe even some television cameras. The event will be free, but you are invited to make donations on the day, however small, or via the pledge page on our website www.fwag.org.uk. The donations will help fund FWAG, with partners such as the Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust as charities, to give free advice to parish councils, schools and community groups about information about how to save biodiversity in villages across Gloucestershire, using FWAG’s Parish Approach Model*.
The event will be relaxed and informal, with guided walks along the Cotswold Way and points of wildlife interest on the commons. There will be opportunities to have a go at dry stone walling and coppice craft for adults, with face painting and fun for children. Local apple juice, beer and cider will be on sale to get the dads along. We hope to provide disabled access to the event. There may be a chance to meet the cows that graze the common. We would encourage everyone to buy local British food for the picnics either from farm shops and ofcourse follow the Countryside Code, bringing food and drink in reusable containers, following the old adage:
Bring only yourself (with your local produce picnic and blanket!)
Take only pictures
Leave only footprints
We hope to make the BIG Picnic a county wide event that gets everyone who lives in Gloucestershire thinking about the biodiversity around us, celebrating it and the importance of protecting it for the future. We would encourage families to walk, cycle, bus or car share to their BIG picnic.
If you would like to get involved and organise an event – please let us know and we will publicise it for you. If you would like to join in the event at Leckhampton or just come along contact the Gloucestershire FWAG team details below.
