Priority Landscapes
Intergrated delivery

Landscape-scale conservation aims to take a holistic approach, looking not just at biodiversity but at local economies, agriculture, ecotourism, geodiversity, culture, archaeology, health and social benefits that come with our natural environment.

Therefore, to help consolidate our 50 year vision for biodiversity conservation, the Gloucestershire Biodiversity Partnership have identified and prioritised for action six County landscapes and/or ecosystems where integrated delivery through effective partnership working and/or specific project development is either planned, or is currently being delivered.

The following criteria were used to help identify the  landscapes/ecosystems:
  • Delivery of a Priority Habitat that the South West is best placed to deliver nationally can be realised;

  • Application of climate change adaptation principles is possible;

  • Delivery of other social and economic 'public goods' in the landscape could be achieved.

A subset of priority project areas and their associated SNAs have been submitted to Biodiversity South West (BioSW) to form part of the first five year iteration of the South West Biodiversity Delivery Plan.

These priority areas are where the Gloucestershire Biodiversity Partnership will help make a contribution towards meeting the 2015 South West targets for the restoration and expansion of Priority Habitats.  The regional targets provide a national breakdown of the published England BAP habitat targets up to 2015, indicating the scale of the contribution needed to deliver national targets.  The ultimate aim is to work towards meeting the new European headline target agreed by the European Union's Environment Council in March 2010 which is:

"Halt the loss of biodiversity and the degradation of ecosystem services in the EU by 2020, and restoring them in so far as feasible, while stepping up the EU contribution to averting global biodiversity loss."
